What is a Neuromodulator?
Botox, a neuromodulator, works by blocking the nerve signals that cause muscle contractions. When injected into specific muscles, the botulinum toxin prevents the release of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that triggers muscle movement. This results in a temporary reduction in muscle activity, leading to smoother skin and reduced appearance of wrinkles. Dysport and Xeomin are also popular neuromodulators.
Does it work?
Neuromodulators like Botox are excellent in temporarily relaxing muscles that cause wrinkles and fine lines. These treatments contain botulinum toxin type A, which is derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. The onset of effects starts withing 2-3 days and the peak effects within 30 days. The effects typically last for 3 to 4 months, after which muscle activity gradually returns.
What is my downtime?
The downtime associated with receiving neuromodulators like Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin is generally minimal. Most patients can resume their normal activities 4 hours after the treatment. It’s recommended to avoid strenuous exercise, lying down, or massaging the treated areas for at least 4 hours after the injections to prevent the neuromodulator from spreading to unintended areas. Some patients may experience minor side effects such as redness, swelling, or bruising at the injection sites. These effects typically resolve within a few hours to a couple of days. If you are getting neuromodulator treatment for an upcoming event, we recommend receiving the treatment 2 weeks to 1 month prior to the event.
